Home Ownership Program

In March 1995, the Housing Authority received a Development Grant to build 40 new construction units. This project was completed in 2002. With these funds the Housing Authority built 20 units in the Vista Verde sub-division off Airport Rd. These were three and four-bedroom homes that and were sold to families below 80% of the area median income. The Housing Authority also built 12 two-bedroom units in the Valle Vista public housing neighborhood and another 8 units in the Valle de Esperanza public housing neighborhood. These units are currently being sold to qualifying families below 80% of the area median income.

In September 2002, the Housing Authority received funding to implement a 5(h) Homeownership Program. Under this program the Housing Authority has renovated and sold 16 three, four and five bedroom public housing units located in the Valle Vista housing neighborhood. The Housing Authority is currently in the process of renovating additional public housing units that will be sold to families below 80% of the area median income.

As of this date, the Housing Authority has provided affordable housing opportunities to 39 families in Santa Fe County (20 new construction units, 16 renovated units, one un-renovated unit, and two town homes). Families interested in the homeownership program should contact the Housing Authority at 992-3060 or Homewise at 983-6214.

Program Qualification Guidelines

To qualify for housing assistance, families must qualify as low income (below 80% of the area median income). The income limits that are published annually in the Federal Register dictate what these figures are and will determine income eligibility.

The Housing Authority has also implemented a Working Family Preference. Applicants who have been working a minimum of 24 hours per week at minimum wage for the previous 6 months qualify for the preference. Applicants who are attending school full-time (12 credit hours per semester) or who are participating in a self-sufficiency program also receive the preference.

Families who are determined to be elderly, handicapped or disabled also receive a preference.

Guidelines that regulate the Pubic Housing Program are stipulated in the Housing Authority’s Admissions and Continued Occupancy Policy (ACOP). The Guidelines that regulate the Housing Choice Voucher Program are stipulated in the Administrative Plan. The Family Self-Sufficiency Program guidelines are contained in the Program’s Action Plan. These guidelines are posted in the lobby of the Housing Authority’s Administration Office.
