Maternal & Child Health Council

The Maternal and Child Health Council was established in 1991 as a result of the county Maternal and Child Health Plan Act of the state legislature, and is funded through the New Mexico Department of Health. The Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners appoints volunteers to serve as Council members and advisors. It is an affiliated council to the Health Policy and Planning Commission.

The mission of the council is to plan, coordinate and support sustainable community-based programs, infrastructure and funding resources that have a positive and lasting impact on the health and well-being of women of childbearing age and their families.

The work of the council consists of evaluating needs, identifying priorities, creating plans and collaborating with various nonprofit agencies in Santa Fe County to improve maternal and child health. In July 2001, the Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution to “Stand for Children”, and funded the Council to develop a Strategic County Plan for children from birth to three. Currently, the Council is focusing on a home visiting initiative as a means of addressing many of the needs of this population. The Council was instrumental in the establishment of the Santa Fe Community Infant Program, funded in large part by Santa Fe County, which provides professional therapeutic home visiting for infant mental health related services. The council is in the process of implementing the 2006-2010 Plan Update.

The Council also maintains a countywide resource directory for families (English and Spanish) which can be found throughout the county or you can get one here at the Maternal-Child Resource Directory link.

In addition, the council contracts with local nonprofits who design and coordinate programs that help solve the problems facing mothers and children in Santa Fe County. The programs include:

  1. Perinatal Promotora through La Familia Medical Center (505) 982-5460.
  2. Adolescent Reproductive Health and Pregnancy Prevention and Mental Health Services through Presbyterian Medical Services Teen Health Centers (SFHS & Capitol High School) (505) 467-2439.
  3. Temporary Child Care Services through Santa Fe Community College (505) 428-1610.
  4. Community Infant Program through Las Cumbres Learning Center (505) 955-0410.

Help us make a difference in the lives of children and families in Santa Fe County by becoming a member of the Maternal and Child Health Council. For further information, please call the Council’s Coordination office at (505) 995-9527.
