El Camino Real Park
Construction is currently underway at El Camino Real Park, which is part of Santa Fe County's overall plan to create a continuous greenway along the Santa Fe River from the west edge of Frenchy's Field at Camino Carlos Rael to the Wastewater Treatment Plant west of NM 599. The County expects construction to be completed in early summer 2012. Check back for updates. With grant funding from the Environmental Protection Agency, the State Land Office restored this portion of the Santa Fe River. Between 2000 and 2005, the State Land Office implemented the restoration project in partnership with the New Mexico Environment Department, the City and Santa Fe County. The project recreated meanders in the river channel, stabilized the river bed and banks, removed non-native vegetation and tons of trash and debris, and planted native cottonwood trees, willows, shrubs and grasses. Santa Fe County continues to work to restore the river using natural materials and native plants to stabilize the channel and enhance the riparian habitat.
