Rules regarding access and use of Solid Waste Transfer Stations

  • Covered Loads. All loads must be covered. Bagged Trash should be covered and/or tied.
  • A Trip. A Trip is considered to be equivalent to one passenger vehicle loaded with refuse, or one pickup truck (rated up to one ton) with a load that does not exceed the cabin-height of the pickup. A towed single-axle 8-foot long trailer loaded to a maximum height of 4 feet from the trailer floor is considered to be equal to one trip. A one-trip-load shall not exceed 8,800 pounds (lbs) in gross vehicle weight (GVW) (GVW = combined weight of passenger vehicle or truck and its load)
  • Residential Refuse. All household refuse must be bagged, except over-sized items (6-foot maximum). No burned refuse will be accepted.
  • Ashes. Ashes should be cold for at least 24 hours prior to arrival. Place in special location as directed at station.
  • No Salvage. Salvaging and scavenging is prohibited at the County convenience centers at all times.
  • Green Waste. Grass and leaves must be bagged. Cut limbs to 6ft or less in length.
  • Tires. Residential only. Up to four tires will be accepted from each household per month.
  • Appliances/Metals. Appliances and scrap metal may be recycled. Cooling units, such as refrigerators, must be certified that the freon has been removed.
  • Motor oil. Residential only. Five gallons maximum per trip. Place in oil tank as directed.
  • Recycling of cardboard, newspaper, office paper, junk mail, and magazines is mandatory.
  • Batteries
  • Antifreeze - accepted at the Nambe, Eldorado, San Marcos and Stanley transfer stations.

1. Each permit is valid for residential waste from one household only. Permits are non-transferable (they cannot be given to others for use). Haulers with wastes from multiple homes must have a county Commercial Permit, or take loads either to Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station (BuRRT), or when in excess of 12,500 lbs. of Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), to Caja-del-Rio Landfill. Misuse of permit can result in cancellation of permit.

2. Each permit is valid for the year printed on the card. Each permit may be used at any of the seven county convenience centers and the Rancho Viejo recycle center. See this link: Convenience Center Map

3. A pick-up truck load is defined as a volume of refuse loaded no higher than the cabin roof-line of the truck, or a load no more than 4 feet above the floor of the cargo box of a single-axle trailer. Operators will punch the permit more than once for oversized loads. LARGE LOADS (over 4,200 lbs. net weight or 21.3 cubic yards net volume) should be delivered directly to the BuRRT or the Caja Del Rio Landfill. No commercial vehicles or vehicles with over 1 ton of carrying capacity are allowed access to County convenience centers.

6. All residential wastes must be bagged. All loads must be covered.

7. Recyclable materials (cardboard, plastic # 1 & 2, mixed paper and glass) must be placed in the correct recycling bins, not in the waste containers.

Solid Waste Transfer Stations User Rates

Residents  are allowed to purchase solid waste permits that facilitate access to any County solid waste convenience centers. This permit is not valid at the Caja del Rio Landfill or the Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station. Eligibility to purchase a permit is verified by the E-911 address assigned to your residence. Your E-911 address is quite simply the physical address of the house in which you live.

  • The permit is valid for the county fiscal year printed on the permit.
  • Loads over 1,800 lbs. (see definitions of oversized loads and LARGE LOADS above) get punched two or three times reducing the number of trips allowed to a station.
  • Permits are non-transferable. Misuse can lead to cancellation of access to the Convenience Centers. They cannot be loaned to another person.
  • All loads arriving at convenience centers must be covered/tarped. This is to prevent the littering of roadsides leading to convenience centers. Violators will be subject to a $50.00 penalty.
  • The County is not responsible for lost permits. You may purchase a replacement for $15.00
